The skin renewal cycle and the impact on our skin health

Our skin plays a major role in how we appear to other people and how comfortable we feel in this skin. We all want healthy, smooth and even skin with a rosy complexion and what is known as a glow. To achieve this goal, we can use cosmetic active ingredients and care products. But only when we have a basic understanding of our skin and its structure, the mechanisms in the skin and its needs can we use active ingredients in a targeted manner to maintain or improve our skin's appearance. The skin renewal cycle plays an important role in a radiant, healthy and fresh appearance. If this cycle is intact and the cosmetic measures that can support and positively influence the skin renewal cycle are known, the skin is able to absorb highly concentrated active ingredients better and radiates this effect.

What is the skin renewal cycle?

The skin is constantly renewing itself and therefore naturally follows a skin renewal cycle. This process of skin renewal normally takes around 28 days. The top layer of skin dies and peels off. The biological aging process of the skin begins as early as 25-30 years of age. As we age, this process slows down noticeably, the skin cells become less active, the skin loses the ability to retain moisture and then needs support to activate the cells.

cell differentiation and proliferation

Keratinocytes play the main role in the skin renewal cycle. The skin cells that form horn differentiate over time into corneocytes, dead horny cells. To do this, the keratinocytes migrate upwards within the epidermis to the surface of the skin and differentiate into corneocytes during this process. They then appear on the surface of the skin as dead horny cells. This process, known as cell turnover or skin renewal cycle, takes between 28 and 60 days. The duration of cell differentiation depends on our age. The older we get, the slower our cells regenerate and the longer the differentiation process takes.

Intact skin barrier ensures skin moisture

The strong connection of corneocytes in the stratum corneum is essential for an intact skin barrier and healthy skin. In addition, an intact skin barrier reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL). TEWL is the loss of moisture that we release from our skin every day through the skin barrier. The healthier the skin barrier, the less moisture can evaporate from the skin. In addition, healthy skin renewal supports the skin's ability to bind moisture, making the skin appear plumper and smoother. Studies have shown a direct connection between delayed skin renewal caused by external factors such as UV radiation, environmental pollution, consumption of stimulants such as nicotine and stress and the direct effects on our skin aging.

What factors can influence the skin renewal cycle?

Cosmetic care products have a major influence on the skin renewal cycle, both positively and negatively. Incorrect cleaning products and aggressive surfactants can damage the skin barrier and wash valuable lipids out of the skin. This makes the skin more susceptible to external influences, bacteria and microorganisms, and cell division can be disrupted. Very hot water also irritates the skin and can lead to severe drying out of the skin. In addition to these factors, UV radiation in particular plays a major role in intact cell renewal.

In addition, increased UV exposure is an important trigger for the formation of free radicals. Free radicals, in turn, have a direct influence on the aging of our skin. With the right cosmetic measures and products, the skin renewal cycle can be positively influenced and strengthened and the effects of UV radiation reduced. Peelings such as mechanical, enzyme or fruit acid peels, which are tailored to the skin condition, have a very positive effect on the skin and cell renewal. Regular use of peels has various advantages: the dead skin cells that lie on the skin are removed. This makes the skin feel softer and smoother and is more receptive to active ingredients.

In addition, the removal of the dead skin cells promotes the cell turnover underneath. The skin looks smoother, more radiant and more even. The right selection of active ingredients also promotes skin renewal. These include, for example, vitamin C, niacinamide (vitamin B3), vitamin E, lactic acid, zinc and hyaluronic acid. Vitamin C, vitamin E and niacinamide in particular are also known for their high antioxidant effect, which is essential in stabilizing free radicals and thus in preventing skin aging.

The combination of highly effective active ingredients that have a regenerating effect, stimulate cell renewal and also moisturize the skin, are ideal for promoting skin renewal and as an anti-aging treatment. This makes the skin appear smoother, more radiant and fresher. The use of a high sun protection product with broad-spectrum filters is essential for preventing light calluses and for the health of the cells.
